When Erica qualified in 1985 from Nottingham School of physiotherapy, she began her career working at Leicester Groby Road hospital, and then at Glenfield General Hospital, Leicester.
Soon after starting a new job working at Burton district General Hospital, Erica realised that neurology held interesting challenges.
She soon rose up the ranks and became a senior physiotherapist at the Burton General Hospital, being responsible for the treatment of patients with any type of neurological disease, deficit or injury.
Erica’s career in neurology continued to flourish when she moved to a new post in Derby working on the specialist neurological rehabilitation unit. She enjoyed the challenge of bringing together the neurological services across two of the main hospital trusts in Derbyshire which, at the time, were working as separate providers.
She forged links from the acute hospitals into community neurological services with a view to building a seamless service, both across the hospitals and out into the community for the benefit of the patient. She was pleased to be given the opportunity to develop and co-write a bespoke seven module training unit for the whole multidisciplinary team in Derbyshire for the training of staff working with neurological patients. Much of her work was spent as consultant to the senior physiotherapists and occupational therapists working in neurology. Erica’s post graduate studies, included several Masters modules in neurology at Leeds and Sheffield Hallam University. Erica was accepted by BBTA to train as a
Bobath tutor. Having enjoyed tutoring nationally, delivering workshops and training sessions she eventually relinquished her membership of BBTA, but continued lecturing locally while her children were young.
Eventually, Erica left the NHS and set up her own private practice with a multi disciplinary team specialising in the assessment and treatment of neurological conditions covering the areas of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. After nearly 20 years of continued growth and with a team of 34 therapists specialising in neurology, she handed over the reins to 6 team members in 2019. While still lecturing on a regular basis nationwide and maintaining a clinical caseload, she continues to offer bespoke training, workshops and patient ‘trouble shooting sessions’ to clinical specialist, newly qualified and non qualified therapists working in neurology.
